Grup Abaim, a music workshop
Since 1988, the music workshop has set up a musical group, the
grup Abaim. It performs in a repertoire of its own and has even
been able to produce six albums. This platform has served to sensitize
the public at large as to the capacity of the Blind Person to participate
fully in creative works. It has prompted the public at large to
recognize the need for the Blind Person to be considered as a person
of worth and dignity.
During the last years, with an extraordinary input from the children
of the Saturday Care project, the grup Abaim has become one of
the most popular musical groups of the country. Its contribution
to the Mauritian children’s tales and folk songs conservation
and dissemination work is now notorious. The work produced is also
considered as pedagogical materials.
One important feature of the musical group is that all funds collected
through musical performances and sale of cassettes/CDs go directly
to the association’s fund. All musicians are ‘donors’ of
their collective musical works to the association.
